Introduction:
Onam festival is celebrated to honour the kind-hearted and much-beloved demon King Mahabali. It is a Harvest festival that culminates with a feast.
Onam is a traditional Hindu harvest festival celebrated primarily in the South Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the most significant festivals in Kerala and holds deep cultural and religious significance. The festival commemorates the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali, whose reign was characterized by prosperity, peace, and happiness. Onam typically falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, which usually corresponds to August or September in the Gregorian calendar. The festival lasts for ten days, with the most elaborate celebrations occurring on the final day, known as Thiru Onam.
During Onam, Keralites decorate their homes with intricate flower arrangements, known as pookalam, to welcome the spirit of King Mahabali. The festival is also marked by traditional music, dance, and cultural performances, including the iconic Kathakali dance-drama. One of the highlights of Onam is the grand feast, known as Onam Sadya, where a lavish spread of vegetarian dishes is served on banana leaves. This feast is a symbol of unity and harmony, as people from all walks of life come together to partake in the festivities. Additionally, various sporting events, boat races, and other competitions are organized to add to the festive atmosphere, making Onam a joyous occasion that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
Celebration:
The celebrations continue for ten days, with several rituals assigned to each day. During the festival, people wake up early to take morning baths, deep clean their homes, decorate with flowers and lights, make Pookalam, prepare Onam Sadhya with seasonal vegetables, and paint intricate designs on their front doors with rice flour batter. Onam Sadhya or Onasadya is a major part of Onam celebrations, featuring over 26 dishes prepared with the help of all the family members and eaten with hands on a banana leaf. Additionally, during Onam celebrations, people wear new clothes and gift jewellery and traditional garments to family members and loved ones. While men choose to buy mundu, boys prefer Pattu Pavada, and women wear Kasavu saree. People also enjoy other cultural activities, including Onakalikal (various games played during the festival), Vallamkali (boat race), Pulikali (a tableau with actors dressed as tigers and hunters), and archery during Onam.
